Circle or a Polygon?

Circle or a Polygon?

A polygon with more number of sides appears to be like a circle.

Student A:
🗨️ “This shape looks like a circle. It must be a circle!”

Student B:
🗨️ “No, it has straight sides, so it’s a polygon.”

Student C:
🗨️ “But I can’t count the sides… there are so many!”

Note:
🗨️ “If a shape has straight sides, it is a polygon — no matter how many sides it has.”

About this shape
• This is a 50-sided polygon, called a Pentacontagon.
• All sides are straight, so it is definitely a polygon, not a circle.
• When all sides and angles are equal, it is a regular pentacontagon.

Why it looks like a circle
• As the number of sides increases, each side becomes very small.
• The boundary starts appearing curved, even though it is made of straight lines.
• That’s why students often confuse it with a circle.
