Avalanche strikes train moving through Swiss Alps

A tourist filmed the scary moment an avalanche barreled down a mountain and slammed into a train traveling through the Swiss Alps on Tuesday, February 17.

Kirsten Osborne, an Australian woman living in the United Kingdom, said the train was traveling near Zermatt, a ski resort in southern Switzerland’s Valais canton, when the avalanche struck.

In video captured by Osborne, a child passenger is heard saying “uh-oh!” as the avalanche raced down toward the train and enveloped it in powdery snow.

Osborne said passengers were stuck “for two hours before rescue and provided bus transport to safety.”

The rail company that operates the train, Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, said no one was injured, but suspended services on the route for the rest of the day due to the heightened avalanche risk. “Passengers were evacuated in collaboration with the emergency services,” the company said.
