Trump just signed an executive order converting 8,000 senior federal employees — directors, chiefs of staff, senior policy analysts — into at-will workers who can be fired quickly and without the civil service protections that have historically made removing career government staff nearly impossible. The original estimate was 50,000 workers. The final number is 8,000. Someone did the lawsuit math. The argument for it is efficiency. The argument against it is that you don’t get a more efficient government — you get a more obedient one.
