Your cat has been chasing that red dot for years… and you never let it catch it.
Cats can barely see red (they have no red-sensitive cones), so the laser is a bright little speck to them. Their rod-packed eyes are tuned to small, fast, zig-zagging movement, exactly like a mouse or a bug, and that switches on the hunting sequence: stalk, wiggle, pounce. Hunting isn’t about hunger, so even a well-fed cat can’t resist. The catch never comes, though, and some cats start searching walls for the dot afterwards.
Try this: end every laser session on a toy your cat can actually catch, or a treat. And never shine the laser in its eyes.
