In May 2010, Florida programmer Laszlo Hanyecz offered 10,000 bitcoins on an online forum to anyone who would get him two pizzas. Nobody took him up on it for days. Then a stranger, Jeremy Sturdivant, had two pizzas delivered to his door. The coins were worth about $41. It’s widely believed to be the first time bitcoin bought something in the real world, and every 22 May is now celebrated as Bitcoin Pizza Day.
Only 21 million bitcoins will ever exist, so as demand grew, the price soared. By late 2017, those 10,000 coins were worth over $100 million, and at bitcoin’s peak in October 2025, over $1.2 billion. Laszlo says he spent about 100,000 bitcoins in all, much of it on pizza, and that he has no regrets.
And Jeremy, who got the coins? He didn’t keep them either. By his own account, he spent them on a road trip.
