Are avalanche forecasts too conservative?
Avalanche forecasters have a incredibility difficult job. The public relies on the accuracy of their information to make informed decisions. It may be perceived that the forecasts are overly cautious. What we need to understand is that conditions can vary significantly over a given forecast. This includes sometimes more hazardous and more stable conditions depending on the location.
I don’t believe forecasts are inherently overly conservative but reflect the variability of the conditions over a wide area.
