Press Release
Urgent Call for Snow Bund Construction at Avalanche-Prone Km 72 on Kargil-Zanskar Highway
Kargil, February 27, 2025
A dangerous snd huge snow avalanche has once again struck Km 72 on the Kargil-Zanskar National Highway at Tangul, a location with a known history of deadly avalanches. Fortunately, this time, a Topline snow clearance operator narrowly escaped, but the incident serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for safety measures at this hazardous spot.
This location witnessed a tragic avalanche in 2023, where two women lost their lives. Since then, repeated appeals have been made to the Higher UT Administration and the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) for the construction of a snow bund (avalanche protection barrier). However, despite the growing risk and continued threats to life, the demand has remained unaddressed.
On behalf of the people of Prakashik, Tangul, Rangdum, and Zanskar district, Haji Ghulam Muhammad, Former Councilor and BJP Patron, Sub Division Sanko, has made an urgent appeal to the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brig. (Dr.) BD Mishra (Retd.), and the NHIDCL authorities to take immediate action. The construction of a protective snow bund at Km 72 is a crucial necessity to safeguard lives and ensure safe travel on this vital highway.
Given the severity of the situation and the continuous threat of avalanches, the people of the region demand an immediate response from the authorities to prevent further tragedies. The administration must act now to ensure the safety of travelers and residents before another disaster strikes.
