An avalanche can hit 80 mph — you can’t outrun it. Ski to the side, out of its path, and grab a tree. If it catches you, fight to stay near the surface. As it slows, push one hand up and cover your face to make an air pocket — once it stops, the snow sets like concrete.
Most people dug out within 15 minutes survive. That’s why backcountry skiers carry a beacon, a probe, and a shovel.
